First, note that "similar", "same" and "equal" will NOT work -- these are synonyms for the adjective "synonymous".
For the noun "synonym", try:
equivalent, substitute
Some folks claim that "synonym", ironically, HAS no synonyms. But that is based on a misunderstanding of what a synonym actually is. To be a synonym, a word does NOT have to have exactly the same meaning in ALL instances. (Actually, if you defined a synonym that way there would be few if any of them at all! Why have a whole set of words with NO difference in meaning?) It simply has to be able to convey the same meaning in SOME cases. If you say "I can't think of a synonym for 'obnoxious'." you could use "a substitute" or "an equivalent" in place of "a synonym" and it would convey the same sense. Thus, in this case, these words function as synonyms for "synonym".

An alternative question may be "Does the word 'synonym' need a synonym?"
In my opinion it performs the job perfectly well on its own, so why would there be a need to create an alternative?

No, there isn't.
'Synonym' is a noun and 'similar' is an adjective. So, it's not the same. Synonym means an identical word and similar means a word alike

Given what synonym means, its strange that it exists on its own. There is no other one word that exactly means what synonym means.
Strange in the same way that unique can be descripbed in other one word forms, e.g. alone

Good question: No, I do not think there is another single word for synonym. Synonyms are different words with similar or identical meanings and are interchangeable. Antonyms are words with opposite or nearly opposite meanings. (Synonym and antonym are antonyms).
Maybe you are looking for the word antonym, because both synonyms and antonyms are antonyms theoretically!

Equal.
Synonimous to means equal to. (but you won't find it under the thesaurus on word!) So think of a few that means equal, and you are starting to get the picture.
