I always use a book mark. Be it an actual book mark or a dollar bill or a piece of paper, I always use a book mark.
I have 20 year old paper backs that look like they just came off the presses. I never lay them down to keep the page to keep the binding from breaking. While I do curve the covers to read them, I don't actually bend them.
A few of my books are so old that the binding glue has dried out and they're now losing a few pages and I have to be really careful with those.

I think it's a habit. I agree with some readers that we should use bookmarks, the reason's simple, that is, we don't want to torture each page by tearing up and dog-earring the book. When I read a book, I must have a bookmark ready to insert between the pages I've just finished.

I dog ear, so I know where to start again or to go back to a good section. Some books have more dog ears than others. It is both my rating and organization system.

I don't highlight....why do people do that? It ruins a textbook...half the time the person who did it before you doesn't even highlight the good stuff. They do you no favors. Commit it to memory or take notes. Like a kindergartner coloring on the lines.

I've always used bookmarks or cut off a corner of an envelope & put the page inside. I agree with people not taking care of books enough but I don't think it has anything to do with that question.

I write in books (only the ones i have purchased, never anyone else's book.) I underline, highlight, write in the margins, etc. I fold pages, and generally wear them out.

The reason. I LOVE to read. I love literature. I love the connections I have with my books. I work with them, I use them. That's what books are for.

When I was a kid I admit that I used to dog-ear my books. As I got older, I realized the terrible damage I was doing and started to use book marks. I practically got yelled at by a teacher in college because I refused to follow his instructions. He told the class he wanted us to write in our textbooks. I couldn't believe it. I just couldn't do that. Underlining and highlighting really hurts the pages and makes it so hard to read, I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I totally agree. I think its a crime to deface good literature. I always look after my books and use a book mark instead of bending pages.

I hate it when my friend bents the spin of the book all the way back when she reads. It's painful for me to watch.
