It wont go black, this use to happen in the days of heavy coal use and Industry due to the high sut content in the air, it may darken a little but generally leave it alone, it will be fine as it is "natural stone" which has been around for a while!!

There is a product made by a firm called Brintons which you just water on and leave and it returns the stone back to it's natural colour. It does work as I sell gallons of it to very satisfied customers. You can find Brintons on the web. They do not sell by mail order due to the difficulty in mailing chemicals, but if you contact them they should tell you the nearest supplier.

Does the black come from dirt, mold, moss, hard water stain?? Hard to tell you what to do until we determine what is causing the problem. If it is hard water and that can't be avoided, then seal with. I have that problem on my stucco house from leaky hose connections. Once I sealed the stucco, no more water problem. Weird when it rains as those spots don't get wet...

If it is just dirt, mold or moss, try using a scrub brush every so often to clean out pores. Be gentle, you don't want to scour out bigger holes.

Certainly do not coat it in anything, because this itself will alter the colour if only fractionally. If it starts to become discoloured due to the weather, just give it a blast with a pressure washer (just buy a cheap one for this job) in the Spring, and it will be good as new.
