Hi,
I have a Packard Bell notebook. It came with 512mb RAM but i removed that and inserted two 1gb sticks. Total ram is now 2gb which is the maximum.
UNfortunately programs still take way to long to open, and boot time is also slow.
Two main qsts:

1. Does it matter that i replaced the original RAM with new Kingston RAM?
2. If i try to speed up my bootup time, what are the essential programs required. Basically, what do i HAVE to keep in the msconfig startup box?

Thanks! :)

Thanks for the answers. FYI, i have anti spyware & adware and antivirus programs running. these also load at startup. i'm not too worried about the startup time, but during the comp. running it shouldnt be so slow.
I had installed this RAM quite a while ago; then I decided to format the HDD and install my own stuff rather than use the Packard Bell boot disc. THEN i had a problem coz the RAM wasnt recognized; so i took it to the service center. Had to be reinstalled with the PB ram.

Anyways, will check it out. Thank you!

2 gigs will do alot to improve a machine, unless your running a dino computer, i would try doin all the basics, defrag your hard drive, free up any unused programs, and find and run a decent spywhere program on your computer, also you have to rember labtops do run a bit slower than a desktop, i myself have a gateway and upgraded the ram runs a little faster but i have a feeling it will always be kinda slow

proseeor type like petium or amd model as well as clock time like how many hertz does your lappy run at are other things to concider make sure you have the corect type of ram dimm simm etc and know the max amont your mouther board can handle also the ms config stuff you might not want to mess with unless you know for sure what your doing and please have a backup cd or a operating system instalation disk pacage if you really mess up but anouther thing to speed stuf up is dont use desk top wall paper if you want to look at pictures there are programs for that not being rude i just mean wall paper eats memory and load time clean all your cookies and cache also try pc.tune free tune up it can give a good diagnostic of your pc condition good luck run a memory diagnose too mem check itsd a free download let it run about 30 to a hour in time to check out your new memory sticks .

Random-access memory (usually known by its acronym, RAM) is a type of data store used in computers that allows the stored data to be accessed in any order — that is, at random, not just in sequence. In contrast, other types of memory devices (such as magnetic tapes, disks, and drums) can access data on the storage medium only in a predetermined order due to constraints in their mechanical design.

Generally, RAM in a computer is considered main memory or primary storage: the working area used for loading, displaying and manipulating applications and data. This type of RAM is usually in the form of integrated circuits (ICs). These are commonly called memory sticks or RAM sticks because they are manufactured as small circuit boards with plastic packaging and are about the size of a few sticks of gum. Most personal computers have slots for adding and replacing memory sticks.

Most RAM can be both written to and read from, so "RAM" is often used interchangeably with "read-write memory." In this sense, RAM is the opposite of sequential access memory.

The bus speed of the slots & RAM should match or else it doesn't make sense in adding high capacity RAM.
Your next question is difficult to answer.

Agree with Sam, replacing RAM likely doing little. I would as soon be wipe HD clean and reinstall.

There is definitely something wrong in your system. Use a registry cleaning software and clean up the start up files.
