hhmmmm Good question.

Actually, Now a days AMD is a better choice than a P4 (even dual core) . But some years ago it was not that good. People were buing AMD because it was much cheaper than a Pentium.

Anyway, the answer for your question is AMD. I can say that because I'm a hardware engineer and I'm using BOTH processors from around 6 years.

When AMD launched their Athlon series, I've started selling AMD processors and have NO problems yet. It is even better for Games, Graphics ralated applications etc...the performance is too good.

The only thing you need to know is....You must use a COMAPATIBLE Motherboard for AMD Processors.
Peoples often don't know which Motherboard to use with an AMD processors and that is why they get lower performance. Sometimes, even the dealers don't know which motherboard to use with an AMD.

A fact about AMD is, It is hard to find a compatible motherboard for it and there are very few motherboards available in the market today.
Because Intel has been so popular all over the world. There are so many compatible motherboards available in the market.
But If you want to compare the Processors I'm sure that AMD is Better.

Hope that helps

At first, lets use two platforms from AMD and Intel, both with an SLI configuration based on NVIDIA's nForce4 SLI chipset. Later, we need to replace the motherboard in the Intel system with one based on the Intel 955X chipset, which also means that SLI operation is no longer possible. In order to make the test fair, lets also remove the SLI configuration from the AMD system. We will then be able to get results from both systems after operation with four applications running simultaneously.

When multiple applications are running, the clear conclusion is that the Intel Pentium 840 Extreme Edition is superior to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+. This result attained by Intel's dual-core processor is particularly attributable to hyperthreading (HT) - the division of the two cores into four virtual CPU units. This was underscored by the fact that when the HT function was turned off, the tables turned and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ surpassed its rival. Here, it is impossible to speak in terms of percentages, precisely because of the different load distributions.

We will get a different picture, however, when we run single applications on each system. Here, the AMD system performe distinctly better (by just about 30% on average) compared to the Intel system.

Thus, when making a purchasing decision, the question to ask is whether or not multiple applications will be running simultaneously. If the answer is yes, then the Intel Pentium 840 EE is your first choice. Otherwise, the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ will give you much better performance for single applications.

If you are looking for desktop PC, AMD has the upper hand now a days. They have some really good processors in the desktop market like, Athlon64, AthlonX2 and Opteron. These processors has low cost than Intel's counterpart but give the same performance.

But in the notebook processor, Intel is still better with their core-duo processor. However, AMD is not far behind with their Turion-64.

In future, Intel is coming up with Quad-core(4 CPU in one processor) in November-2006, whereas AMD will launch their Quad-core early next year.

However, Intel has some disadvantages. If any new generation CPU is launched, user has to change the motherboard to upgrade his CPU.

While, AMD doesn't do this frequently. You can find that there are motherboards which can be used with Athlon64, FX, X2, all three CPU's. So same motherboard can be used for many years. AMD's latest AM2 socket is out there which can support more than dual-core processors. You can use it now for Athlon64, later you can opt for AMD Quad-Core (which are AM2 socket based).

So in my opinion, in desktop PC market, AMD has the value for money.

a lot of people think Intel is the best but mostly they think that because Intel's have a life of about 40-50yrs where the amd only has a life of about 30-35yrs, I've tried out a lot of processors in the day and i have to say from personal experience that amds run circles around Intel, out of my 6 computers only one has an Intel processor and that's only because they didn't offer amd in this line of laptops

From experience, I'd say that AMD has more VALUE while Intel has more DURABILITY; that is, AMD will give you a faster CPU dollar-for-dollar but Intel will last longer without problems given the same temperature and operating conditions.

I guess what you get would then largely depend on what you can afford, what your operating conditions are, and how often you upgrade processors and/or replace units.

AMD is best in terms of cost and use. But, it is not advisable to use because if there is some problem with the system then we don't have many experienced hardware / service engg trained in AMD processor to rectify it. That is where Intel scores.

If u look for the best and popular brand Go for INTEL(Spend Little Extra). If u look for the best and slightly unpopular brand Go for AMD(Obviously u will save few bucks)

In my opinion, the crown of the most preferable processor will have to be given to Intel.

Especially, after the release of Core 2 Duo Processors which beats AMD Dual Core processors in speed, power consumption, heat and price.

Before the release of Core 2 Duo processors, I think AMD is being crowned by releasing their high-quality yet cheap processors codenamed "Winchester".
