I have 3-4 hours a night.... I was wondering if this is eventually going to be detrimental to my health. I feel fine though.

Yeah i'm the same. I'm lucky if i get 4 hours a night, which is why i'm living on pro plus and lucozade during the day. Can't get my damn brain to switch off. I think eventually we'll just collapse and sleep for a week. I'm quite looking forward to that.

OK, this 6-8 hours malarky is crap that people have heard but never really researched. Nobody knows why we sleep or what purpose it has in our everyday lives. It is thought to be something to do with the amount of REM sleep which we have which reduces as we get older. (which is why we dream less as adults cos we dream in REM sleep). What we do know, however, is that as children most of our growth is done in this part of the sleep cycle.

The amount of sleep which people take is dependant on their age. People in their 20's average around 10 hours a night if they don't want to feel tired in the day; someone in their 50's averages around 5 hours a night. The 8 hours referred to is the average you get if you even out all adults but as you can see the difference between 20's and 50's is a lot.

All guidelines published do not have a recommended number of hours sleep, they merely list the average. In answer to your question, as long as only a few hours sleep a night is not causing you any stress and you don't feel tired during the day, and, no offence, you're not taking any kind of drugs or medication which may induce insomnia then you are not damaging your health.

By the way in addition to Margaret Thatcher, Horatio Nelson was reported to have only 2 hours sleep a night so you're in good company!

Normally 7 but last night none at all, I just couldn't sleep at all, all I've done today is sit and yawn my head off and if I don't stop I swear I will break my jaw with all this yawning, don't know how old you are Queenie but some say the older you get the less sleep you need, if your happy with the amount of sleep you get each night and its not having an adverse effect on your health or life then don't worry about it, 3/4 hours would suit me fine at the moment.

Are you depressed? Unemployed? What do you mean by "I feel fine?". Surely if you were active during the day you would sleep better at night.

Having said that, Margaret Thatcher was famed for only having 4 hours sleep a night, but she was a power crazed lunatic!

Hasn't it also been stated that George W. Bush has only 3-4 hours sleep a night?

I'm beginning to worry about you...

I have approx 5-6 hours a night, cat is going senile, sure of it...wakes me up 2 or 3 times a night, nutta....think I would prefer 3-4 hours of unbroken sleep than a longer period of broken sleep...feel like pooop in the mornings!! I don't think it will be detrimental to your health as long as your body is coping, fair play to you

people need an avarage of 8 hours throughout there life but not ALL there life. A baby needs a lot more, so do teenagers, ill and converlessing people and the elderly. If you only sleep 3-4 hours and you feel fine you are fine!

I used to get 7 or 8 hours until my son was born. Now I'm lucky if get 5. I feel fine though. He's 16 months now and I think my body clock has adjusted to it. Then again I'm not going out to work on so few hours sleep, don't think I could cope then.
