First off Rolex is not built to be a status symbol. These watches are typically designed to withstand depths and altitudes not capable of most wristwatches today. Next it's all about the movement 3135 being the most common. These are extremely precise in keeping time and thus never loose a second. Then theres the craftsmanship each piece is hand engraved and very little automation is used to ensure absolute perfection. Then theres the guarantee. Rolex is a watch you wear for life, you can pass it on to your children and it can stay in the family for generations to come. There are also several other qualities Rolex owners appreciate such as a green sapphire crystal which is 100% scratch resistant. If you buy a Rolex as a "status symbol" then you may want to reconsider. Rolex in the sense of high end watches is really the Timex of exotic watches compared to say an Audemar Piguet or a Franck Muller 10-15 times more expensive than most Rolexes. Furthermore a Rolex is designed with a timeless design this allows for you to wear it for years to come and not look dated or out of style. This is why there is such a consistent look to them when it comes to the crowned bezel and link arrangements in the bands. I imagine a great deal of people buy them for their alleged status, however there are also a great deal of people who just really love watches the same as some love exotic cars. So to answer the question, its more of a matter of why a Rolex is special to you.

I Rolex is also an investments as they tend to retain some of their value. I think it is a personal thing - some people like expensive shoes, some expensive cars etc. I think if you look at Rolex and how their are designed and crafted you will see that they really are a beautiful time piece. I would love to get one but somehow food and shelter seem to take priority right now.

Well look at it this way,...
A Rolex is like the Lamborgini of watches.
Which would you rather drive a Mustang or a Lamborgini?
While some people can afford to get a mustang - new. Few people can afford to have a Lamborgini.
Chicks love hot exotic cars, and - well a Lam, stock off the showroom floor can blow away just about any production sports car ever made, even those with aftermarket modifications.
I once dated a guy whose rich father had five of those (Lamborginis) when my own honda broke down, his dad lended me one of them to my delight for a few days till my car got fixed.
I had such fun with it that I didn't care about getting caught trying to go to warp speed on the interstate stretches. Which is why the police hate them (they can't keep up with them) but they can call ahead of you to cut you off with their buddies down the road.
So I got my license suspended, no biggie, it was fun and it was worth it, since I'll never get to do that again,.... unless I win the lotto,... Well, maybe I'll just get a cute Shelby Cobra, it may not be a Lam, but it can smoke a Mustang with plenty of torque to spare.
cheers babe
mahalo!

The only special thing about Rolex is the care that was taken creating the watch.
Society choose to see possession of a Rolex as a sign of wealth. Owning one is supposed to imply that you are a person of prestige.
All it implies to me is that you spend your money on ostentatious material possessions and that you need the status symbol to bolster your ego.

There isn't a damn thing that is special about Rolex watches. It's the same as, say, a Citizen watch or something else that is comparable. Yes, they are made extremely well. But it is more a way to show off your money. You are paying for the name Rolex. Thats all.

the only thing special about a Rolex is the price and the 'oh does anyone want to know the time'. I agree they are horrid watches, if i had money to spend on a expensive watch I'd buy a grandfather clock and strap that to my wrist?
