Can you suggest the ideal place to go to in Europe during the New Year for a week with a two-and-half year old son. Nothing too expensive, mind you. Can anyone help? I need first hand information because this will be our first trip to Europe.

I recommend Funchal- Madeira (Portugal)- a city in an island. Very beautiful and peaceful (if you're taking a child with you).
It's cheap, there're great hotels, bars, discos as well as beautiful places to go for a walk. It has some traditional events at that time and wonderful fireworks!
There's a very nice place to go for a walk in Funchal which is the marine: the boats are restaurants, really nice!
Choose well!

I would suggest Eastern Europe, being least expensive, but definitely worth seeing for the history, the people, the food. It is catching up with the West so rapidly, that you shouldn't have any problems. I recommend Poland, it's really interesting and the people are very hospitable and respectful toward foreigners.

Maybe Prague is the best choice. Very nice town and cheap enough.
The flight from U.S. could be much more expensive
then one in Western Europe but you could fly first
there and then take a low cost flight.
There are a very large number of low-cost air lines
in Europe and their flights are very cheap.

There is a list here:

The most famous are Ryanair and Easyjet.

If it is your first time, I'd suggest France. Paris is beautiful, and the beach too. Maybe Spain
