command of the English language? I mean, most of the time, they use slang whereas other countries using English as the language of instruction use "Standard English"... Tests like TOEFL (test of Eng. as a foreign language) show that these non-English Speaking countries score higher than the Americans.

Honestly, your command of the language is not very strong, and if you learned through TOEFL, your use of the language is not a very good endorsement for that organisation.
A caucasian is a "white" person, not an english speaking person.
Someone from Poland, Italy, France, etc. could be caucasian, as could someone from the Phillipines, Japan or any of the countries of Africa.
Language is a living thing; that means it is constantly changing and evolving. English is spoken in many different dialects, as are all languages with a large base of speakers. Think of English in Jamaica, Northern Scotland, New Zealand, Newfoundland; all very distinct, but all English. Slang is a term meant to refer to words, not the language as a whole. No-one speaks in "slang"' ; they use terms which are considered slang outside of their speaking group.

A lot of Americans may not do very well on a Standard English test because they don't speak Standard English, they speak American. And the American they speak depends entirely on where they learned to speak it.

standard and conversational english. isn't this the same with all languages? the united states has created it's own version of english. coming from all the different regions, nationalities, and races from all over our planet. i would assume the version of english that is being taught as a second language is the standard version. so of course others will score higher. i took spanish in school. i passed with a B+. i couldn't understand what my neighbors were saying after i had graduated. i got my aunt to teach me the conversational spanish and now i have no problem with it. but to answer your question. true we Americans do not have good english teachers. so we learn how to speak on our streets. sorry for the long explanation.

I am English and barely understand a word of American.

However, I often talk through business with ofreign people who have been taught English out of a book or whatever, and they often much better at some of the finer nuances of English than english people (who tend to slip into the vernacular, as you imply)...

They generally do have a problem with the tenses that we all take for granted though....so in terms of purity of language...they have some way to go

Know what I am saying gee-dog? word to yo mamma

No, they don't. Just look at the spelling that these morons display. They rely on spellcheck and I always come here for a good laugh. I always shake my head at the total degradation of society. Not only is the future generation becoming more violent, they are horrible, horrible spellers.

I'm Australian and English is our main langauge but.....

we are notorious for cutting words short even when it comes to our own country, instead of "Australia" we say "Stralia"....

and the whole Good Day = G'day...

But I wouldnt have it any other way, its our langauge and culture and we can do what we want with it!

Most of the English I get to see here is just plain awful.I think that us "foreigners " use your language better. And we say the words as they were meant to be.
