How do I crop an avi file without applying a compression filter to an already compressed file (thus reducing the quality)?

What you have to understand about video compression is that it's not simply pictures that you can crop down. AVI is a file format that is often used with MPEG4. MPEG4 frames are put into groups called a GOP(group of pictures). Each frame in a GOP except the first is dependent on the frame before it and sometimes on the frame that comes after it. You need to re-encode the video file if you crop it because some of the information that the next video frame depends on may lie in the area you are cropping off.

Lets say a ball flys from the left to the right of a screen. It's takes less information to draw the ball once and move the image with a vector. MPEG does something like this although it's a lot more complicated than it sounds. What if you crop off the left part of the screen. Then the ball never gets draw in the first place and so you can't simply move it.
