no law can make a self-employed person stick with the 40 hour law. it is only applicable when working for government.

If you are non union and as well in a right to work state, the employer can ask or tell you to work overtime. If over 40 hours and not a restaurant job then they have to pay you 1 1/2. If you refuse to work it and not under a contract, they can replace you or punish you like reducing your hours until you quit.

I'm assuming you are in the USA because of the George Bush reference. Although as a point of interest labour laws are different in each country and also the EU has it's own set of labour laws.

Ovetime work cannot be mandated except on the following as provided for in the Labor Laws:
1. When there is a need to repair machines to avert damage,
2. When emergency occurs and workers are required to protect
company properties,
3. When public service is required, and
4. In analogous cases as mentioned above.

Currently there is no law limiting manitory overtime, just that overtime compensation is required when an hourly employee works more than 40 hrs in one week.

You have to get payed 150% of your regular wage for overtime work. They can mandate anything they want. They can fire you. What if they find someone else who will work longer hours than you. They just have to pay you more.

i think if its your original hiring contract then they can do it. check with the labor board as they should know for sure (even about the new law) funny though the employers always get to do whats best for them and NEVER whats best for the employees
