the reason that religion ruled the dark ages is because since the beginning of time society has swung back from a secular society to a religious one. the dark ages were a result of the fall of the roman empire. and i know that you are thinking the Romans believed in gods. but most Romans "believed in the gods" to save face in their communities.the reason that religion played heavily in the dark ages is that there was no central government only a monarchy. and it easy to control stupid people with spooky language and mythical figures.

It was a time that the church punished people for being different. If you were a scientist or and artist you might have a problem with the church. Many people where tortured and put to death during that time.
