A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. Generally, Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. (A professional degree is usually earned after earning a bachelor's degree in a field such as medicine, law, or dentistry.) In some cases, you might receive a Pell Grant for attending a post-baccalaureate teacher certificate program.

To determine if you're eligible financially, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula, established each year by Congress, to evaluate the information you report when you apply. Students with family incomes up to $50,000 may be eligible for Pell Grants. However, most Pell awards go to students with family incomes below $20,000. In 2004-2005, the grants ranged from $400 to $4,050. The average grant in 2004-2005 was approximately $2,230.

Apply for a Federal Pell Grant by completing a FAFSA Application. These are available at high schools, colleges, vocational schools, libraries, community and state agencies, through the website below, or by contacting:

Pell Grant
Box 84
Washington D.C. 20044
(800) 433-3243

Some schools prefer that applications be filed electronically rather than filing a paper application. Check with the school to determine its preference.

Once the FAFSA has been completed and filed, the progress of the application can be tracked by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center toll-free at (800) 433-3243 between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time), Monday through Friday. You also can check the status of your FAFSA online.

The college you are registered at should help you with that Because they want the money. My college set me up with everything I needed and much more. Your local school district should have information as well, and on the web. Their are grants even from places such as Pepsi, Frito Lay, and others. Some are only for as little as $100 from each depending on your major. Any Business major or health field major has many out there. There are allot out there that want an essay "to win" a grant....maybe a waste of time, but not for the ones that win.
Most states also have programs for people looking for jobs or that want career advancements that all you do is register, go to maybe an hour training that you might not need, but then the state helps pay for college expenses, car repairs, and helps eliminate any barriers you have to succeeding in work or school.

Aside from FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and Pell Grant http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/2004_2005/english/types.htm , you may want to explore private foundation grants

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) and their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices."
