I just noticed again that some (many?) native americans still have very deep feelings that western immigrants are guilty of ruining their society. They still seem to blame the present generation of americans for that. As we can't disappear into the air...how to solve this problem ? Is there a realistic way to take these feelings away ? Is it about respect ?

I'm not sure it is true if you say "it's easy to be white". It depends on where you are.

Try to walk as a white person in the wrong neighbourhood in Somalia or Iraq and you stand a good chance of being robbed or killed.

The situation didn't come about in a day. It won't be fixed overnight either. It will take more than a show of respect. Native Americans, like the descendants of African slaves, need to have real opportunities and respect for years, decades, even centuries to recover from centuries of mistreatment. Some Native American tribes will never recover. Their religion, language and customs are gone. Supporting Native culture and language and art will help preserve pride. Supporting alcohol prevention and treatment will help as well. Many Native Americans are genetically plagued by alcoholism and it limits their ability as a community to come together and work toward the future.

It would take an effort from both sides. You can't change the past, but you can make reasonable reparations for it. This would probably have to be looked at on a case by case basis, tribe by tribe, and in a way that doesn't penalize the modern generation, who had nothing to do with what the previous generation did. But our government should still do something reasonable to make up for the many treaties it failed to keep with Native Americans. This also doesn't mean giving them a free ride, just giving them what they need to get their feet on the ground (when and where they need it), so that they can, through their own hard work and determination, live more than decent lives.

On the flip side, the Native Americans need to move on, and not live in a victim mentality. They need to forgive and forget, and not live in the past. Live in the past and you will never have a future. What has happend has happend. We nor they can change the past, but we can change the future, and make it brighter than our more ignorant past. But the healing won't take place unless the Native Americans themselves decide they want those wounds to heal.

I would have to say...quit labelling us as "them". Are we not all human beings. I have let the past go. It is awful hard when "natives" are still called Indians. Do we live in India??? I mean, for crying out loud, just because the white people's forefathers were ignorant, does that mean the senselessness has to continue. Get to know a "native" and you will see we are just like everyone else. It is fear, ignorance that will keep us down. I hope that people will start to use their heads and realize we are all the same. God just put us in different packages.
It is those people who feel they have to label people, "blacks", "Indians", "East Indians", or whatever, that seem to feel that they are better than other people that look different.

It sure must be easy to be white!!!

its not about respect. they live in a dream world hell hole they themselves have set up. they talk about how great their people USED to be. they cannot adapt to the changing times and therefore they're sucking at life. maybe instead of wasting time complaing, they should put down the bottle, actually get off the reservation, get out into the world, and get a life instead of having the government give them one. Adapt or dissapear and die. That's the way the human race has always been. If it wasn't the white man it would have been the yellow man, or brown man, or whatever. It was going to happen sooner or later.

Make friends with them.Go out camping together. When you guys reach the camping site, raise a Teepee and not a tent.Ask them to teach you how to survive in the wilderness(hunting animals, medicine, navigation, etc),talk about politics til they drop and go for a fishing together. It really helps in bonding with the natives.
