To answer this question thoroughly would take a few books and several websites...

Moreover, scholars would not agree. The faculty in the school of business administration would apply standard formulae and procedures (devised more from tradition than as the result of objective research) to the question, the folks in sociology would look at it as an opportunity to apply systems theory or to examine via phenomenology, and the communication people would describe the process of leader emergence...

From my own perspective (having taught organizational communication), I think it's misleading to label people as "leaders". People play roles in groups and organizations; in the most effective ones, the roles are flexible.

"Leader" is just another role that people play. Sometimes a leader is appointed (tho' "facilitator" often works better), but more often people in their roles practice "leading" in various ways. Calling a person a "leader" pigeonholes them into a particular mindset. For me, it works better to think of it as a verb rather than a noun.

The leader is no more important to the success of the group than a good researcher, a creative thinker, or a critic. Different groups have different needs for leadership, and some groups have no single member who stands out as "the leader" (and those groups are either utterly dysfunctional or are the most successful ones you ever can hope to find).

For good theories about leadership, you need to dig back to the 1960s or so and find the book/article listed below. You can find books about the management styles of Microsoft, Arthur Andersen, Enron, the big automakers, etc. which will explore the issues thoroughly--there's no way to explore them intelligently in a discussion board. For a really interesting view of "enlightened" leadership in action, look up the Ideo corporation.

The trend, in one word, is Professionalism: and, Money-sense! the two together will make one a good leader in today's fast-food world! Gates, Narayana Moorthy, Asim, all have in them a good measure of both: and, vision with sharp focussing power! Then there are all-time values like the human touch, concern for colleagues, feet firmly on earth, head fixed well and steady etc.!
