Play it safe and have your partner use a condom until after your next menstrual cycle starts.

It takes 7 or 14 days for most combined contraceptive pills or 1 day if you started the pill on the very first day of your period. You never have to wait an entire month!! Doctors and nurses just say that to make sure that women starting the pill don't stop using protection before they are used to regularly taking their pills because missing one compromises your protection. Read your pill pamplet information.

If you have JUST started taking the pill, you should wait at least 2 weeks before you have unprotected sex. This varies for each type of pill made, so please always read the leaflet that comes with it.

Always get your partner to wear a condom if you're unsure. You can also wear a femidom (condom for women) if you prefer.

Of you're in the UK, you can call up the NHS for advice. They will take down details, and call you back when someone is available.

Hi you should of read the instructions in the packet as it does tell you but i will tell you anyway. If you take it on the first day of your period you are protected straight away, but if you take it any other time in your menstural cycle you have to use another form of contraception for the first 7 days. It tells you everything in the leaflet, the nurse should of also told you.

You still need to use protection for the first month and then after that it's fine as your body will be used to it but the pill is still not 100% effective though.
