There is no "safe" day. Sperm can survive in your body for days after you have sex, waiting around (although most of it gets picked off by your white blood cells) for you to ovulate. I'd say right before your period would probably be safer, except that's when I usually ovulate and get pregnant. You can chart your ovulation cycle and that will give you a rough guideline of when you usually ovulate, and thus when your likely to not ovulate, but there are theories that woman can spontaneously ovulate when they're having a really good time outside of their normal ovulation cycle.

No time is safe to have unprotected sex if you do not wish to get pregnant. You can even fall pregnant if you have sex while you are menstruating. Always use birth control! Condoms are a good idea as you avoid diseases as well.

Yes, it was with me, up until about the 5th day. I was not Catholic, but used the same method. I did not get pregnant often, except when I wanted to. I knew when I ovulated and not to have sex then, so it worked with me. Not everyone is like that and ovulates the same. You have to know when you ovulate to determine the safe times.

Not a good form of birth control. I recommend a real form of birth control such as the pill, condoms, or the only 100% effective form - abstinence. I use Seasonale and love it, it's nice only getting a period 4 times a year.

Thats just an old wives tale. You can get pregnant any time, even if it is the first day after your period. Please don't fall for the myth. Make sure to use protection at all times unless you are prepared to have a baby.
