the government are about to spread out the use of facial recognition software so that there use will include passport offices dept. of work and pension offices etc. it is claimed that the use of such software will not only cut terrorism but help reduce fraudulent claimants etc. what will happen then to muslim women wishing to wear the veil and such is it big brother going too far or is it a sensible step forward in today's climate.

So that's another reason to stop the muslims wearing a veil.....the software wouldn't be able to recognise the face as it would be covered......Might work though because if it can't recognise the face surely it would spark an alert!!!!

Depends on how much it costs. Governments have a habit of spending billions of pounds on useless technologies.

The veil issue is a nonsense. When are people going to give it a rest. The government is using it to distract people from its internal divisions over its failed policies.

All that is needed in any public building is for a female security officer to politely ask any muslim woman wearing a veil to come to a private area and remove her veil so the officer can see her face (and even show it to a camera). The same with airports or any other place that security is needed.

Do people really think that Jack Straw ever allowed women wearing veils to visit him in his private office without a rigorous security check and search? C'mon, get real.

William, welcome to A&Q. You will have hours of fun, but don"t take some of the answers too seriously, and ignore the abusive ones. Anyway to your question, I think it"s a good idea and will help with Benefit fraud. How it will deter terrorism, I haven"t a clue. If they already know what the terrorist looks like then go out and catcht him or her, being able to recognise them when they walk in a building with a bomb wrapped around their waist is just a little too late. The government love to play on peoples fears, thats how the Yanks got the Homeland Security act through. As far as Muslim women are concered, if they want benefit or any form of advice from Government Agencies, then they will HAVE to remove the veil. full stop. Guess who"s going to pay for all this technology though, got it in one, the already overburdened tax payer. Anyway have a good day.

To much political correctness, their in our country so if we kit out Govement buildings , they will have to comply to our laws, its the same as if a guy wearing a motorbike helmet walks into a bank or petrol station , they have to take it off to help Identify them.
