My 3 week old is already developing acid reflux. He spits up three to four times a feeding, then usually an hour or so later. He strains and contorts his whole body before he does, and sometimes he cries out. I feel really bad, because I'm assuming it's only going to get worse. My doctor told me that basically all the medicines on the market for it just ease the pain and don't stop the "spitting." He said that there was a medicine on the market for a few years a while back that reduced the number of times babies spit up, but that it got pulled after studies showed that in rare cases it could cause weird cardiovascular problems. So far, he doesn't want my baby on anything unless his pain level seems to get worse, since pain management is really all the medicines are good for. Burping him often helps a little, but not much -- only seems to reduce the volume of the "spit," not the number of times it comes up. He spits up so much so often, he winds up having to feed what seems like nonstop throughout the day. I was worried he spitting back up everything he drank, but he seems to be gainning healthy weight, so I guess it just looks like more than it is. He'll sleep, but only when he's with me or beside me. If I put him in his crib alone he'll wake up within minutes upset, so I don't get much sleep. I've resorted to giving him a bottle a day just to give my breasts a rest and time to recooperate some milk. My brother suggested that the long feedings are him using me as a pacifier, or the spitting being a result of him overfilling himself, but if I try to cut him off short, he gets upset or he just gets hungry again an hour later, and he gets mad at the pacifier when nothing comes out of it. When I give him the bottle, he'll drink anywhere between two and five ounces, and he spits up about the same amount of times no matter how much or little he eats. He's a great baby when he's not hungry and his tummy isn't upset, but unfortunately, he's almost always hungry or sporting a belly ache, or both. Sometimes rubbing his back and shoulders helps put him to sleep.

Sounds like one heck of a problem...when i was breast feeding and my baby was gassy, i found it was due to alot of what i was eating. Try the mylicon gas drops for gas, but double check to see if it is o.k. seeing you are already using some meds. My daugher had this problem, the told me it was acid reflux, nothing that they could do...she grew out of it by 10 months. Baby could be swallowing air from throwing up. At any rate, i hope you figuire out whats wrong and can get past it. The little ones are so innocent and you feel so bad when you as a mother cant fix something. its frustrating. i hope you and your baby find some comfort soon. Hang in there mommy, it will get better.

You are definitely not alone. Gripe water is worth a try, but it did not help my daughter and even seemed to make her worse. So far, the only thing that has helped is the Zantac that the pediatrician prescribed for her. We put it in the syringe and stick it in the side of her cheek to give it to her and although she doesn't like it at all, we manage to get it down her throat. It took about a week for it to start working good, but now she is doing much better. Also, I give her some Mylicon before her last two feedings of the day since that is when she seems to be the worst. I know it is really hard to watch them throw-up all the time. Hang in there, it really will get better eventually.

My two month old has reflux as well. She is primarily breastfed, but when she does get a bottle, I use Playtex Nursers. To be perfectly honest, she is less refluxy on the Playtex nurser than the breast (I think she overeats on the breast from comfort suckling). I used Dr. Brown's with my middle child (who coincidentally developed cancer at age 2 - related? Probably not, but I will never know!). I really like the Playtex bottles better! There is sooo much less to clean! When the baby is older, should you choose to let the baby feed herself, do you want the bottle to be glass? Oh, a couple of things - You do not need to squeeze the air out of the liner. As the baby eats, the bag collapses. No air gets in. Also, the Target Brand liners are just as good as the brand name (unless your baby eats more than 6oz, then you need the Playtex Expandable liners). Best of luck to you and your baby!

Try changing what YOU are eating. Also how often does he eat? Baby should only eat until he releases the latch on your nipple. Also don't burp him until he releases the latch, as he can draw in and swallow air during that time. Most infant feedings take between 15 minutes to 1.5 hours, so don't be discouraged. If your nipples are sore try using a silicone nipple shield. Baby will have to work harder to get milk and thus will be more tired after feeding. Also, do not give a soother, or pacifier, as this changes the sucking pattern and can cause baby to swallow air. Avoid heavy dairy products. Try using a calcium pill instead of drinking milk.

Make sure to lay baby on top of your shoulder with head above body and neck in straight position for burping. Make sure baby's head is not crooked or turned. Rub baby's back vigorously until he burps...Be persistent and don't get discouraged. Air in the tummy is making him throw up. Get a second pediatric opinion, as babies taking meds scare me...

Hope this helps.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE - we had the same problem with our youngest and until you see your baby being sick continually after everything they have people don't really know how worrying it is. We had this problem for about 5 months before our Doctor suggested changing her milk from mine (wanted to desperately bf) to Soyamilk as she may have a lactose intolerance. Worth the question as it's really difficult to diagnose and it's just literally a change of milk. I felt like you and didn't want ANYTHING in my babies other than my milk but I had to come to the decision that it was my milk that was making her sick. Worth asking maybe...good luck.

Yes you can try the GRIPE WATER or KOLIK DROPS available at Walmart.......

my daughter was EXACTLY like that....with her projectile vomiting.....and I found the kolik drops to be better
doctor said that her stomach has not matured yet......
and will do it on her own.....and wasn't concerned either because she was gaining weight.
She grew out of it by the time she was 4 months old.

It sounds like he might be allergic to something you are eating. Its probably a dairy allergy. Try taking out all the dairy in your diet for a couple of weeks( with your doctors ok first) and see if this helps any.

We used a formula called Gripe Water that is basically herbal and it worked brilliantly for similar symptoms that you describe. We bought it in supermarkets and pharmacists. Worth a try.
