its nice to hear ur point of view as a muslim that doesnt feel the need to cover urself all the time & are aware of how it looks.... for us brits its very frustrating, if we went over to ur country we would have to cover ourselves up because that is the way u live but it seems a lot of muslims dont care & think it is ok to dress & act as if they are back home & we english just have to fit around them!! its a shame there arent others more like u...

I don't mind people wearing their national dress when in other countries at all. Its when people come to britain and then moan about everything british. And when people from other countries try to impose their religion and beliefs on others. I gave birth to my first daughter in an east london hospital and was actually told by the midwife that i should go without pain relief because thats what muslim mothers did. I pointed out i wasn't muslim then demanded lots of pain relief!! I live in Edinburgh and we don't see that many muslims in their head wear but me and my 4 year old did recently see a woman wearing the full covering and of course my daughter stared coz she hadn't seen it before. The woman's companion actually gave my daughter a filthy look. I also wonder how a scotsman would be welcomed if wearing a kilt with no underwear (traditional scottish dress) in a muslim country!!

British people feel threatened by Muslims in their cover-alls. We've had to suffer from extreme religion and the black garments are very much in your face.
Also, you will find women saying they do it to counteract the near nudity of Western women. Well, as a western woman, I cover up. I wear jeans and a top that isn't low. And I feel modestly dressed. You don't have to wear a tent to show that you don't agree with the way some of these people dress.
The reason women wear these clothes is to make a point or to stop people looking at them lustfully. I would much prefer a woman to have the self confidence to wear what she wanted without worrying about such things. Most men have some self-control. Women don't attack men just because their faces are showing. And if they're wearing the garments to make a point, that is shoving the Muslim religion in other people's face. And in the present climate, that is unwise and will fuel people's concerns.
By the way, I respect all religion. My thoughts are confined only to dress.

Many Muslims were born in the UK, as were their parents and grandparents. They are also British citizens. Way back, in the late 70's the British Consulate here in Switzerland stamped my British Passport with 'Holder has the right to abode in the UK'.
People from Hong Kong (and the Falkland Islands) held 2nd Class British Passports labelled 'British Subject'. As far as I'm concerned, one is either British or not.
All the hate which I read on this site against Muslims, makes me ashamed to say I'm British and only serves to make those who feel themselves to be counted as second class citizens because of their race, ethnicity or colour more inclined to make a statement. To wear the hijab or the niqab and say, 'Yes I'm Muslim and I'm not ashamed of the fact.'

I live and work in Bristol, the area I work has a heavy population of Muslims that wear traditional clothing and scarves/hijab, i don't think any differently to wards them, and nod, smile as i would any one else. I guess for you its about having the choice to dress like this or feel you have to for your aunt.. at the end of the day, if you make the effort to fit in and people reject you, they are not worthy of you. I think i understand what you are saying, carry your self with pride, as a women you don't need any ones permission to be you..

Well I see a few ladies wearing the headscarves around Bristol and don't really come across ladies who wear the veil. I always like to look on the bright side and notice that these ladies wear all sorts of nice colours and nicely patterned scarves. Afterall they are just normal people going about their everyday life! It beats some British girls and women who go arond with various parts of their bodies on display no matter what size they are! Its down to personal choice really whether you wear it or not, I don't find it offensive or annoying, just interesting to see how different people wear it!

To be honest I don't really mind.It is too much fuss around that. I think it's should be choice and reason: you can wear what you like with respect to the country you are in. If I am going to Muslim country I will wear sensible clothes. I do expect the same here.

we have to fit in with the muslim way of life when we visit muslim countries so why should we be expected to bend our values around muslims when they come to our country?
Muslims seem to find something to upset them in everything that we do here in the western world, even Apple's store on 5th Avenue in New York has upset them for goodness sake!
I think perhaps if they don't like the way that we live then maybe they should not be here blowing every little thing out of proportion.
We don't go around shouting the odds about having to cover ourselves up in their countries, why should they be allowed to be any less tolerant than us?

Best advice I can give is get away from this dangerous and barbaric cult.
I find it strange, almost disturbing that the only news that the western media are prepared to cover on this subject is what apparel a school assistant is wearing when she does her job when a few minutes on the internet one can find independently verifiable stories on events that knock that story into the pale.
Any psuedo-'religon' that glorifys death, denies women there basic rights of freedom, mutilates woman (I'm referring to F.G.M.) should be caged from the world.

I dont think theres much problems with muslims, I dont think down on them or think im superior ,but i do believe bending towards the traditional british cultre would benefit them and the british bourne people.
Anyway enjoy your day and please dont feel threatened by anyone else around london.
