Most of what happens in a radiator is not chemistry, but physics. Hot water or steam transfers thermal energy to the metal of the radiator where it is conducted to the outside of the radiator and released as heat.

However most radiators contain iron in one form or another and the hot water contains dissolved oxygen gas. This promotes the oxidation of iron to rust according to the following reaction:

2 Fe (s) + 3 O2 (g) --> 2 Fe2O3 (s)

Automobile radiator anti-freeze solutions often contain anti-oxidants to prevent this reaction from happening.
