I agree wholeheartedly!
My guess is that people use the amount of punctuation they do because they either are (a) insecure so they really need to emphasize what they say or (b) think the world revolves around them and their opinions. Or they just aren't educated.
I guess that includes everyone except us 'normal' people. LOL!

I think that people who are shy or insecure use it in an attempt to be heard. Such people often laugh after making a verbal statement when communicating face to face. I speak from personal experience. At the same time, I'm realizing that I never use multiple exclamation points. I usually use one and a dumb smiley face.

I don't feel that overuse of exclamation marks is that bad. I think that if you find it demeaning, you may think rather highly of yourself since I'm almost positive the author hasn't done it to intentionally demean you in particular (I know I don't feel that way).

You're right, of course! But they simply seem to pop up abundantly when I'm excited or upset. I think it's also a bad habit dating back to the days when I wrote letters by hand - I used to design multiform exclamation marks and enjoyed it. I know those days are gone (sigh!) but the habit stuck. I'm trying to get rid of it...... Desperately!!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!

You're spot on, and unfortunately it's a sign of the brain-dead, spectacularising of the language. One ! is enough, especially irritating is when the point doesn't even warrant that.

I tend to do it for it seems cute, I never meant it in a demeaning way.
