Use gmail...

Get a separate email for signing up for things online so that you aren't spammed in your primary email account.

Everytime you get an unwanted email follow the "remove me" instructions. You can usually get off of a HUGE list with one remove me, as many of these companies are connected.

Once your email address is on a spammers list it is almost impossible to get off. Right now, your e-mail address (along with millions of others) is on a CD being sold from the back rooms of software shops from Bangladesh to Botswanna and from Norway to the Netherlands.

However there are several things that you can do to prevent even more spam.

1. Start by removing your e-mail address from your Yahoo profile,if it is on it. The spam-industry has programs that are continusously crawling the web looking for the "@" symbol which is a sure sign the the word before it and the domain name after it is an e-mail address!

2. Use a longer address. The spam industry uses programs that try sending e-mail to all known domain names. Example: a program might start trying to send out e-mails to everyone starting with aaaaa@INVALID.com and continue down to zzzzz@INVALID.com. Using a longer e-mail address will make this harder to do.

3. Never click the "Unsubscribe Link" in any e-mail. This will only confirm to the spammers that your e-mail address is indeed real and that you are reading their garbage. In fact, do not even open any e-mail from anybody you don't know or trust. Many spams are not only annoying but contain viruses of other malware. Just delete 'em without opening 'em!.
You can however click that "Unsubscribe Me" button from businesses that are well known and that you trust. Walmart... yes. Someone selling Viagra...no.

4. Open up a second e-mail account. Whenever, a website requires you to register using your e mail address, use this secondary address. There are many unscrupulous websites that will sell you address to others or bombard you with spam themselves.

5. Download a free copy of SiteAdvisor. SiteAdvisor will alert you when you search (Google, Yahoo, MSN, search only) of websites that are known to send out spam. This can help you avoid registering with any sites that are known to spam people.

Treat your e-mail address just like you would your telephone number or home address....only give it out to those that you absolutely trust!

Do not open them. Some spam contain devices that report back to the sender to confirm that your address is active. Once that happens, they'll keep sending in more to you.

I've noticed that they come in waves, where if you get a few in a week, it'll build up into a big swarm of spam, only to quieten down after a few weeks.

This is also true of the "unsubscribe me" link at the bottom. It does exactly the same thing, though I think these links should be ok if the message is from a reputable company, or one that you can remember signing up to. But if you don't recognise it, and if it's gibberish, selling sex potency aids, claims to give insider trading information, claims that you've won the lottery, claims that some rich African tycoon's lawyer's desperate to give you £20m, or otherwise the email address looks dodgy or is blank, just report it, block it and delete it.

Open the junk e-mails (not the ones with attachments - they may contain viruses) and go to the bottom of them where there is usually a link that you can click to get off their mailing list. Alternatively, use Yahoo! Mail becuase ever since I changed to it, I have not received any spam whatsoever.

create filters. In yahoo mail go to
options > mail options > Filters
Click on Add button to set a filter.
Give a name to your filter.
You can create filters for the subject text that you receive often. For example if you are receiving mail having viagra in the subject line.
Then Add viagra in the text box in front of
Text-contains- type viagra here
Leave the match case unchecked.
There are also filter options for checking words in header, body, of mail. After that decide where the mail will go. In your case select the folder named trash as below.
Then-Move The message To-select trash from the list.
Press Add Filter button when done.
You can set as many as 15 filters in yahoo mail.

do you mean real "snail mail". If so, sign up to the mail preference service. They also run the telephone and fax preference service avoiding sales calls and spam faxes.

Avoid surfing on weird sites - set SPAM filters but dont put them
too high as they could filter off your real emails.
