Check and make sure the barbell is surgical grade steel. Gold and silver should not be used until piercing is completely healed because your body will reject them ( been there done that). Use dial liquid soap to wash and no creams!!!!! lay a bounty paper towel in a bowl and soak with saline eye-wash, pop in the microwave and heat it up...lay it on the piercing and do this every evening....it is very soothing. These are the instructions I got when I got mine pierced again and I had no problems the second time.

It's not a matter of rejecting the barbell. The body might reject some bugs that come along and this will produce an infection--red, perhaps some pain and some puss.
Also problems come from an allergy to the type of metal used. Stainless steel is commonly used but surgical grade materials are often not used. Some people do not have bodies that like silver others do not like gold. You may want to try another barbell made from a different material if you are having discomfort.

How long have you had the piercing?
If it's still healing - it could be an irritation or just the skin healing from the wound - keep on doing sea salt soaks twice a day and pay a visit to your piercer, if neccessary.
If it's already heeled, the easiest way to tell that a rejection is happening is that the barbell seems to be getting closer and closer to the surface of the skin (i.e. mor of the length of the barbell is showing after time). In that case, definitely visit your piercing and try to remove the affected piercing asap (in a hygiene) way before it rejects completely (i.e. barbell falls off and leaves a nasty scar).
In the meantime, keep on doing the sea salt soaks
Good luck!

Ive had my belly button done 3 times. The last 2 times my body rejected the metal. After I would get it done it would begin to heal... I could even change the ring if I wanted to... but then this little lump (kind of looked like a bubble) formed underneath the ring. As much as I washed it or even poured rubbing alcohol on it, it never went away. I took my ring out and a couple weeks later it was gone. That happened twice... I decided that if the 3rd time didn't work then I was done, and I am.

Does it apear to be pushing it out? the area around the barbell is it getting smaller? when the bar bell falls out it rejected it. wait for it to heal and if you want try again except have the person who does it put it a back a tad as the first one was rejected.

It doesn't heal and stop hurting in a couple of weeks and nasty smelling pus continually flows from it. Then you should take it out. I had to pierce mine five different times before it healed correctly the fifth time. Are you using Bactine three times a day in addition to soapy washing?
