Yes, not only should we believe in the soul, it should be understood that we are the soul, we are spiritual entities having a temporary material experience, not material entities with the potential to have a spiritual experience.

This is the first point to be understood, on the path to enlightenment, that you are the soul, not the material body and the symptom of the soul is consciousness or awareness, just as there is individual consciousness emanating from each soul, there is also a supreme, all pervading consciousness, or God. Both are individual and both contain personality, which is the topmost feature of both.

The material body is simply a biological machine, a very complex machine but it is also an impersonal, external, inferior energy composed of molecules and atomic particles. The material body is never the same twice, it is constantly changing, in a state of constant flux and perpetual motion.

Within the material body is a subtle or astral body composed of mind, intelligence and ego. The subtle impessions imposed on the mind via the medium of of the relative material energy, forms our false ego or identification with matter, which is a relative or temporary identity only.

Consciousness, which is a symptom of the soul or self, manifests through the subtle mind and intelligence, similarly to a programme manifesting through a television set, the television set is not the primary cause of the programme, just as the mind is not the primary cause of consciousness.

Beneath the subtle body is the eternal, original spiritual body that is eternal, self aware and blissful. The symptom of the real self, which has individual identity is, as previously stated, consciousness itself, consciousness is not material, therefore it is beyond the boundaries of experimental empirical science and the mundane materially minded mental speculators and some philosophers.

So, once consciousness and the soul or self has been understood, then in the human form of life, a choice must be made as to whether each individual chooses to perform material or worldly activities, therefore creating a certain type of mentality, which at the time of death will leave the old material body and by nature's direction be awarded with another material form, perfectly suited to the mentality that has been created, under the influence of the three modes of material nature, goodness, passion and ignorance.

However, if the individual is a wise and enlightened person, then that person will seek to purify the subtle body and remove any material contamination of the mind and intelligence, by spiritual activities, when the subtle body is cleansed, then just like a pure pool of water, the individual can perceive their real identity as an eternal spiritual being, this is pure consciousness, they can rationally perceive spiritual reality, the source of that reality and the effects of inferior energy in its various forms within any individual who is conditioned by material desires and activities, which is a polluted state of consciousness and leads to further material encagement within the prisonhouse of material existence.

Soul

For other senses of this word, see soul (disambiguation).
The soul, according to many religious and philosophical traditions, is a self-aware ethereal substance particular to a unique living being. In these traditions the soul is thought to incorporate the inner essence of each living being, and to be the true basis for sentience. In distinction to spirit which may or may not be eternal, souls are usually (but not always as explained below) considered to be immortal and to pre-exist their incarnation in flesh.

The concept of the soul has strong links with notions of an afterlife, but opinions may vary wildly, even within a given religion, as to what may happen to the soul after the death of the body. Many within these religions and philosophies see the soul as immaterial, while others consider it to possibly have a material component, and some have even tried to establish the mass (weight) of the soul

The question is about something other than the body, mind, intellect etc... whether there is something 'independent' that holds these things and if so, whether the letting 'go' of the 'hold' constitutes what we call as clinical death !
See, even researchers in medical field resort to just clinical death, because of recorded instances which could not explain the occurrences about revival from clinical death !
And a deep introspection within, with a reasonably calm , reasonably inactive mind, leads to the presence of a 'witness'.... though this is just a possibility , the happening of it proportional to the intense involvement, coupled with extreme state of relaxation, and sharp alertness !
The name 'soul' could be substituted to suit one's fanciful choice!

The space does not ask us " do you believe in me?". The wind also does not ask us "Do you believe in my existence?" Whether we believe in them or not they exist.

So is the soul. You can deny its presence because you cannot see it. Your great grand father was not seen by you but that does not mean that he did not exist!

Just do this simple experiment. Close your eyes and think of a folwer.. a rose. You see a rose in your mind. The rose that you have seen somewhere , sometime and the memory recalls that rose . But something else illuminates that rose in your mind . That is consciousness. That is awareness. That is you. Your soul.

What is the name of the person after his death? You will say he was Mr x------ you do not acknowledge the body as Mr x. then there was some thing other than the body which was Mr X?
By your own cognition it has to be. have you ever seen it. No but all of us know that it was there and it is not there any more. you can call it life/life force/ soul etc. What ever it is without it the physical body is useless.

If you think of soul as the thing that 'go out of the body after death ' ,
I don't belive in that. I never had any compelling or otherwise reason
for believing in that.

Yes! I believe in soul, because of my firm conviction in the teachings of great acharyas contained in the vedas, puranas and shrutis.
