You could do one on spices of the world ... exploration, exploitation, botanics, international markets, food and culture, commercialization, role in the food industry, etc. I go probably write 100 pages on this!

Here is an idea for a research report for you, but I must say it probably won't be as 'fun' as chocolate: It would be very interesting to look into the alarming rise in lung cancer cases since 1900. Now 1900 was around the time that cigarette smoking really took off--BUT that was also when the automobile, powered by the infernal combustion engine began to exert its death grip on the populace. While 'experts' tend to tag the lung cancer rate to smoking, most seem to ignore the connection with having the populace constantly breathing the highly carcinogenic exhaust from cars. Good luck with whatever paper you write!

I believe you want to research on something tangible, something that is devoid of conspiracy and doubt, something that we all can relate to.
I read a couple of books on Henry Ford and his astronomical rise in the business world. I think it was a very interesting topic.
You could also do a research on Michael Jordan and try to point out the main reason(s) behind his success.
Or you could do a research on the American Civil War and try to reason why the winners won.
Other than that there are numerous topics around us: Rise of the computer industry, Sugar, Rice, Cotton trade in the world, Oil trade, Gold, Diamonds--Also what DeBeers controls its price. Levis, Harley Davidson, McDonalds. The role of railways in the rise of America.
I think you must first find out what you like, and go from there.

Halloween? I know it has certain religious ties. What about describing the American traditon of jack-o-lanterns, trick or treating, costumes, and the display of scary images? I love Halloween and would love to read such a paper, because I do not know why I still decorate for the holiday when I do not have children at home.
