My father gave me a plant before he moved and I don't remember the name of it to find out how to take care of it. It almost looks like a cactus but he said it wasn't. It blooms out like a rose but the leaves are green and stiff like a cactus and they have a little barb at the end of each leaf. If you don't know what kind it is can you please direct me to a site that can help?

Tuberous Begonia? Kinda has the texture of a cactus and rose like blooms. Popular as a potted plant, can also be grown outdoors in shade but must be lifted and stored over winter. Here's some pics:

It is really hard to tell what a plant is without looking at one, but my first guess would be an agave (maybe Agave parryi) of some sort.

When you say "it blooms out like a rose", are you referring to actual flowers or the fact that the leaves are structured so that they look like a bloom?

Sounds like a Rock Rose, grey to green in colour and the leaves make a formation looking like a rose.
