electricity was never invented, it was discovered, since it occurs naturally in nature. and some people may say that franklin discovered that with the kite and key. But that story is actually false made to glorify the american patriot. much like the story of george washington chopping down a cherry tree, and telling his father, "I cannot tell a lie."

electricity is a naturally occuring phenomenon so can't have been invented.. if however you are asking when was it discovered...
The ancient Greeks and Parthians knew of static electricity from rubbing objects against fur.
Though Benjamin Franklin's famous "invention" of electricity by flying a kite in a thunderstorm turned out to be more fiction than fact, his theories on the relationship between lightning and static electricity sparked the interest of later scientists whose work provided the basis for modern electrical technology. Most notably these include Luigi Galvani (1737–1798), Alessandro (1745-1827), Michael Faraday (1791–1867), André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836), and Georg Simon Ohm (1789-1854). The late 19th and early 20th century produced such giants of electrical engineering as Nikola Tesla, Samuel Morse, Antonio Meucci, Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, Werner von Siemens, Charles Steinmetz, and Alexander Graham Bell.

Inventor of Electricity
Electricity wasn't invented. Its properties were discovered, examined and explained.
Thales of Miletus in ancient Greece is the earliest record I can find of experimentation with electrical properties. There are two types, lightning and man made.
Here are more opinions and answers from other FAQ Farmers:
Alessandro Volta invented the first source of continuous electric current.
Benjamin Franklin.
No, Franklin proved that lightning was electrical in nature and performed several experiments with the properties of the (known) force of electricity. Electricity has always been around, of course; I believe the other respondents are correct in saying Volta was the first to identify it as a force.
No one "invented" electricity. It was discovered.
It was 'discovered' by alessandro volta
No, it was discovered thousands of years before that. Thales of Miletus, a Greek in 600AD discovered static electricity that attracted pieces of straw and hair to rubbed rods of amber. Volta invented the first real battery, in 1779. Benjamin Franklin was the first to liken static charges ot lightening, and found them ot be the same thing, electricity. He also discovered the difference between negative and positive charges. The word 'electricity' actually comes from the Greek 'elektron' meaning amber.
Well, no one really "invented" electricity, but you can ask who discovered it. While people have known about the powerful effects of lightning for thousands of years, the first person to discover that lightning was a naturally occuring form of electricity was Benjamin Franklin. In 1752, during a dangerous electrical storm, Franklin flew a kite that had a metal key at the bottom of the string. When a bolt of lightning hit the kite, a spark of electricity flew from the key! From this experiment, Franklin invented the lightning rod, which attracts lightning and draws it into the ground. This saves many buildings from burning down.

Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb , as did Joseph Swan. But Edison had the big idea of building a power station to light the homes and streets of New York.Electricity was invented in 1879 , year when Edison invented the light bulb.

Electricity is a general term for the variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge.
It includes many well-known physical phenomena such as lightning, electric fields and electric currents, and is put to use in industrial applications such as electronics and electric power.

Electricity is a natural thing so discovered is a better description and of all the scientists to experiment it was Faraday who did most of the "useful" experiments such as electric motors
Franklin would probably have been fried if he had tried the kite and key thing in a thunderstorm

At the creation of the Universe.
Benjamin Franklin did several experiments and was the first to suggest that lightning is electricity. There were electric experiments before Ben Franklin though.

Ben Franklin perhaps the best American in the history of America found the usefulness of electricity with a kite and a key.
people before him knew about it, but had no idea on how to harness it for usage.
they had no clue..but Ben Franklin was the first to do so.
he's a hero.

A large jar, thousands of years old, was discovered in the middle east. It was thought the jar was actually a battery. So electricity may have been discovered in biblical times.
