If the door knob had a hole in it, take a narrow obect, and put it in. Turn it and the door will open. I have done this before. Good luck, mate.

Another option is to take the pins out of the hinges of the door. But that depends on how the door is hung and which way it swings.
I assume the knob has a beveled latch as you tried to use the credit card. I used the handle end of a large stainless steel spoon. A strong butter knife would likely work as well.
And as mentioned earlier, if the knob has a one way swivel lock from the inside, the outside will have a small hole right in the center. Straighten a paper clip or hair pin and shove it in that hole then turn the knob. (Most bathrooms have this type of knob.)

use a coat hanger. The curled part that goes over the coat rack is perfect for maneuvering around the lock, depressing it and allowing the door to open. You could also straighten the curled part and push it through the hole in the center of the doorknob. This hole is typical on interior home doors. You simply push the locking mechanism causing the door to unlockl

If it is a round handled doorknob then do what Sunshine said....if not then you can take the door handle off by removing the screws and get in that way........then you have to put it back on again!!!
