My daughter loves books, especially board books that play music. Anything with a lot of colors and textures too. The Fischer Price Roll-A-Round balls are great, even though it says from six months. My fourteen month old still plays with them, as she loves them.

I would also suggest any toys that help aid in standing or walking such as the LeapFrog Learning Table. It's a bit pricey, at $40; however, it teaches colors, ABC's, 123's, songs, and opposites. Well worth the money!

The big fat lego/duplo building blocks are great!
At our house, they were one of the most basic well used toys we had around for years until the kids were able to handle the smaller sized blocks. At ages 13 & 16, they still pull them out at times and make some great creations!
They also LOVED toting stuff around - each other, pets, toys, anything that wasn't nail down was fair game!

I would suggest something like this...
http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Bloks-670-Blok-Wagon/dp/B00005QX3O/sr=1-57/qid=1161240814/ref=sr_1_57/002-8257441-3296860?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games
At the moment you may feel this is a little old for him, but he would grow into it very fast.

I hope y'all have a fun first Christmas together!

This age can be hard to buy for, but think ahead. For the first two years, he will constantly changing, learning to walk, talk, etc. Tonka has trucks for small children, they're durable, and something he will love for a long time. My daughter wanted one at the age of one, and she still has it in storage. She's now, 14 yrs. Blocks for him to stack. Balls, any size, are fun. A stuffed animal or two. Also, think about what you son loves, and what catches his eyes when he's in the store. Just watch him during Christmas shopping, and see what it is that he likes. Kids also love wagons, too.

Whatever it is make sure that you get an age appropriate toy. (He will probably be more fascinated by the wrapping than the actual present. I have three little boys, I know.)
I think the best thing for a child that age is balls, books, "Baby Enstein" movies and any stuffed animal.

The best way to do it is ask the attendant at the toy department, try for something that does more than one thing, like a push toy that maybe has a shape sorter. Or he may just love a "tickle me Elmo" check it out - it makes us laugh.

If you go online to ToysRus.com you can search for toys in his age group and also get reviews from actual customers on how they like it. It works great for Christmas. I have 2 granddaughters and never know what to get them. It really helps.

Hohoho :)
A few ideas:
*Personalized baby toys/puzzle/book
*Baby music

What is important is that it's his first Christmas, so you can think of starting a tradition. Read this blog post:
