We are sorry but there will be a delay in the delivery of your work.
We pack with care and will have you work to you as soon as it is possible. Apologies for any inconvenience this causes you.
((you might want to give an anticipated delivery timeline))

You'll need to provide a few more details--what exactly is he expecting? Why is it late? When should he expect his work to be delivered?

Try this formula:

"I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, but due to (insert reason here), your (delivery) will not be avaliable as originally anticipated. I expect it to be ready for delivery by (give him a solid date). Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at (insert phone number with area code here) or email me at (insert email address here). Thank you for your patience and I look forward to doing business with you again."

Above all, just be polite. Things happen. We all know how it is. Being polite (and avoiding making excuses) will help you out a great deal. Good luck!

Dear Customer:
Will you accept our apology? We made and error in putting your shipment of October18 together. Thank you for calling this to our attention. We work very hard to please our customers, but obviously we must work even harder in the future. You may expect your shipment within the next 24 hrs.
Again, I am very sorry for the inconvenience to you. We do value your business and your friendship.

Cordially,
