Why would someone want to send faxes from computer? Are there any other uses?

Because FAXes don't carry viruses like document attachments do in e-mail. Many businesses require communication in this manner in lieu of submitting documents via e-mail. It is convenient to send a FAX from your PC than having to have a separate machine or to go out to the local convenience or stationary store to FAX a document.

A lot of businesses still use the ol' fax machine so if you are in the high end and need to send a fax but you dont have a fax machine then you can send a fax through your machine to those people.

It also helps on the run. Lets say you are doing business in Chicago and the company in Texas needs a fax you can just pop-open your laptop find a wireless connection and send your fax, many times even for free!

Many small Mom and Pop shops STiLLonly have a fax as their most advanced technology; so to communicate electonically with them, and not having to buy your own fax machine, you can turn on Microsoft's fax program and have it send out Word documents as faxes.

That feature was created when all internet was used through telephone lines and so, people wanted to be able to fax as well as surf the internet from their telephone line. There is no real purpose for it anymore since you can just use email, so Microsoft gratefully left it as a "gift" on all their operation systems.

to cut down on paper usage. just think about it- a fax machine just prints whatever it receives. a computer will save it to the harddrive then when you view it you can tell the computer if you want that document printed or not. i send faxes from my computer all the time.
