What a great question... I teach my children to respect themselves and eachother. That no matter what or who turns against them they got us and eachother. I teach them that to get respect you have to earn it and also give it. That LOVE is the most powerful force and that near or far I'll always be with them in heart and soul... When in trouble lean on God for He loves them in good and in bad.

I taught my children to never judge a person because of the color of their skin or because of the religious beliefs they might or might not have. I taught them that each person is different and that what matters is on the inside of a person, not their outward appearance. If everyone would teach their child these things the world would be a better place.

if it were a girl: to be independent and not depend on a man or anyone to take care of you. Be wary of men who do not have their stuff together but totally cling to you.
if it were a boy: To respect women, never to hit them or put them down in anyway. To have his stuff together before he thinks about being serious with a girl and not to trust her when she says I'm on the pill.
With both children I would teach them to always use protection and refrain from sex until marriage if possible (yes i know I'm a hypocrit)

I don't think there is just one thing that would be the most important thing if you want a well-rounded child. There is RESPECT, TOLERANCE, SELF-ESTEEM, CARING, and I can go on and on. Good luck

self-reliance.
the one thing that will take them through life when all else fails is self-reliance. this is not pessimism, or a removal of a parents advice/help/guidance, as these things never end.
but the core of who we are should feel safe in our own abilities.
