do this combined with cold turkey...somethings you have to do it more than once..my brother tried several times and is now quit over 10 years. My dad died of lung cancer which is a painful death..tell your dad to try this and keep trying till he is successful..my dad finally quit after many side effects an attempts (for 2 years) but they missed his tumor with an xray (they went back and saw it 2 years later) and didn't catch until 2 years after he quit smoking. It was too late for my dad, maybe it won't be for your dad. The worse side effect is death so he must endure any he has but this herbal formula will reduce side effects from quitting.

I agree - those patches and gums are a waste of money. I've tried them, and was dissapointed. When my dentist asked me to stop, I asked to see pictures of smokers' teeth. I asked my family doctor for information on smoking. She told me what smoking does to my body, and boy was the list long. She also told me about Wellbutrin, a prescription drug which helps to banish your bodies urge for a cigarette. I took a breathing test which told me I have a 54 year old's lungs (I am 40). after I got that news, I decided that it's now or never. I just started the prescription, so I'm not sure if it really works yet. I suck lollipops all day, and I talked to people who have had a family member die of lung cancer. I keep trying all of these things, and I've cut down to a few a day - hopefully I will be smoke free soon.

There is no way your dad can stop smoking unless he is absolutely and totally convinced that he wants to stop, and can stop. You can't convince him - he has to decide for himself.
If he has made that decision, then he has to decide on a date and time when he will put the decision into action.
Then the following will apply.
Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.
