Being free and being institutionalized is not good. Being institutionalized is basically saying that a person functions better in a controlled environment. An institutionalized person does not have to worry about where to sleep, where their next meal is coming from, bills...etc. Just because a person goes to prison or a mental institution doesn't mean they are institutionalized. Some people can function in society after serving several years in an institution, and then some can't. If a person done 20 years in an institution and knows that times are different, but once their out reality sets in and that person can't deal very well with the changes so many times they end up going back to the institution that they came from. To know whether or not a person is institutionalized is better left with a counselors perspective.
