I know lots of single people who get by on 20,000, but i wouldn't say comfortably. If you can't live on 30,000 or 35,000 you've got a drug habit or buy too many things you don't need.

The answer to your question is in the "type" of lifestyle you plan to live. Lets look at some essentials. Housing. To purchase a house you can do it easily with $40,000/year income. Along with your mortgage is the car payment. Monthly food expenses is not that bad, you can find pretty much the same kind of foodstuff you're accustom too in the Asian Markets, and China Town. Clothing expense depends on taste. You will have to allow extra for winter clothing which can't be used in the summer. Furniture and appliances for your home can be purchased on credit to build up and establish your rating. Entertainment expense is for your own well being, things you do for fun and relaxation. Self-improvement through continued education, hobbies and past-time. If and when you marry, the extra family members will have to be figured into the budget. Hopefully the extra income a spouse brings in will leave room for investments and savings. Now, what I have just enumerated, is of course "Ideal". No ones life is this simple. The only thing is, if you have a plan, or a guide, it will help you come as close as possible to meeting all your needs, than no guide at all. There are many solutions to Living on a good income. Find out what they are. Make your own that will fit what you want. Talk to the experts, there are many and the info is free. Good luck and prosper.

Totally depends on the State and City you choose to live in. Every place will have a different standard of living. For example, a house that sells for $400K in Arizona would sell for $900K in most areas of California simply because of location and cost of living in the area. So minimums could be anywhere from $30K to $60K, if you don't have a family/kids could possibly get by on less.
