This question is for Wisconsin. My employer said it is ok to fire me for being sick. I have heard different.

yes if the company is at-will.
If the person is out due to a serious longterm illness, a doctor's note is definately required and the employer may encourage the worker to quit so they do not have to pay un-employment.

Others seems to have answered i.r.o. laws applicable to Wisconsin. (I do not know USA law).

As a general principle, employers CAN fire you if your sick leave makes it impossible for them to function. (EVEN if you really are sick and take sick leave in line with their policies.)

It is however not a simple procedure to fire someone under such circumstances, and it can be challenged by the employee. Try to negoatiate with employer re severance benefits.

If you've been on the job for over a year and your employer has more than 50 (I think...) employees, you can probably be eligible for FMLA. You won't get paid for the time you take off, but your job would at least be safe.

I believe yes they can. I know it's happened before. Most jobs have a sick policy what was yours?

yes, they could fire you for taking too much time off regardless of why you are taking it off
