there's a girl i know who's taking birth control pills, but I don't think she's sexually active because she's in a long distance relationship and never sees her boyfriend, so she isn't having sex (and she's not the type to fool around). But she's taking the pill. I was wondering why she would bother taking the pill if she's not having sex. Does the Pill fulfill any other purposes besides just limiting pregnancy?

Very much so, I was put on the pill when I was 15, not because I was sexually active but because I was having horrible migraines. I charted them and they were always exactly the day before my period. They were so bad I had to miss school and work because I would vomit uncontrollably and have to get shots because I couldn't keep down medicine. Finally the doctor recommended me getting put on the pill so it would regulate my hormones because she suspected it was the cause of them. The drop and spikes of hormones my body was producing (or lack thereof) was sending my body into a frenzy during my periods. The pill has been a blessing, I now only get migraines a couple times a year if that, and it's usually stress related not hormone related. So yes, the pill is used for conditions other than preventing pregnancy!

The pill can be prescribed for a variety of reasons even if a girl isn't sexually active. Irregular periods, extreme hormone fluctuations, or extremely heavy or painful periods are just a few reasons why. Some girls also take birth control to stop themselves from having periods for several months in a row simply for convenience's sake.

Yes, many people use birth control pills for other things besides pregnancy prevention. Lots and lots of things. Being on pills does not mean that someone is sexually active.

Birth control pills are made up of female hormones. the reason they work is they trick the body into thinking it is pregnant so you don't ovulate. Many times girls who have irregular or very painful periods are out on birth control pills to elevate these problems. It doesn't have any thing to do with having an unwanted pregnancy.

The hormones in "the Pill" can be used to treat some medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, adenomyosis, anemia related to menstruation, and painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea). In addition, oral contraceptives are often prescribed as medication for mild or moderate acne. The pill can also induce bleeding on a regular schedule for women bothered by irregular menstrual cycles and certain disorders where there is dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Combined oral contraceptive use reduces the risk of ovarian cancer by 40% and the risk of endometrial cancer by 50% compared to never users. The risk reduction increases with duration of use, with an 80% reduction in risk for both ovarian and endometrial cancer with use for more than 10 years. The risk reduction for both ovarian and endometrial cancer persists for at least 20 years.

Although the FDA does not officially condone the use of the Pill as a minor breast enhancer, many women have gone on the pill in order to increase their breast size. [citation needed] This results from the low doses of estrogen present along with the progestin. Results vary widely.

Yes it also helps ease pain of period cramps and bloating and a lighter period. Some types can also help with acne. Also its probably good for her to be on them for when she decides to have sex because it can take up to a month for the pill to even be effective. It can also protect you against uterine or ovarian cancer. Also regulates period so you know when the crimson tides coming! Just one pill a day! What a great thing!

Yes, it can be used by some women to reduce acne since pimples can be hormonally triggered. You can also use the pill to control when you have your period, if you continue to take the hormone pills instead of taking the red sugar pills you do not start your period, this can be very handy if you want to rearrange the time of your period so you do not have to have your period while on holiday or during exams.

If someone is on Accutaine, a very powerful acne medication the doctor will insist that you go on the Pill.

I was on the pill to regulate my period, when I didn't even have a boyfriend or anyone to have sex with. It was to avoid having another 50 day period(That was awful). The pill made them very short & I had no cramps.

They are used for a variety of purposes, but i think they are often used to regulate the period to a consistant cycle. Teens and younger women are more prone to this. Taken from page 2 of the link below..."many times young women will be put on oral contraceptives to regulate their periods."
