A primary is to choose who will be selected from each party to run in the general election. Usually, you may only vote for your own parties candidates but some places it's different. It is important to vote in primaries because they determine who will be representing your party. The general election is the main one that finally decides who will hold office. A gubernatorial election is one that decides who will be governor. It is usually held at the same time as other elections unless there is a mid-term vacancy. If it is the year to elect your state's governor, there will be a primary gubernatorial election on the ballot with the other offices and issues. Then in the general election, the gubernatorial candidates who were elected in the primary run against each other.

Primaries winnow out candidates of particular party to a winner for each party. When a legislator retires sometimes a dozen or more candidates from the same party will announce themselves. After the primary, the winner is the designated candidate from a particular party.

The general election has the winners of the primary compete for the actual governmental post. In the United States, this is always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Gubernatorial elections are elections for a Governor of a state. California has a Gubernatorial election this year. This depends on your state.
