Look up the "Medici" family. They were one of the biggest influances in Florence. Florence is often accredited as being the birthplace of the Renaissance. You will have so many answers you won't know what to do with!

probably because as the nation grew rich from trade they were able to expend money towards things like the arts and science, but especially the arts, some of the most beautiful and lasting work were financed by the Medici family, who made their fortune in trade. The rennaisance was about an awakening, and enlightenment, it was the end of the dark ages of ignorance, starvation, and disease.
