He's smart enough to know that he is not well accepted by society. Oh friends, maybe. But not by bosses, parents of other kids, society as a whole.

If he is your friend then that is all you need to describe him. He can try to act straight but that shouldn't affect your friendship.

Refer to him using whatever term he uses to refer to himself. If he's straight, call him straight. If he's gay, and hasn't come out of the closet, call him straight. If he's bi, call him bi. If he's gay, call him gay.
