Jacksonian democracy meant to increase public participation in the political process, using the patronage process - the idea being that a politician would be held accountable for poor appointees, and people would be more inclined to participate if they might get a federal job.

As Jackson and his allies managed to get power, those who opposed him started working together more to defeat him. This started with the National Republicans, and finally became the Whigs. Essentially, this is where the two party system started, although third parties.
