tell her to turn off the stupid IM sound!!! If she get's mad over that... then she's a jerk and you can play at that game the next morning when you wake up and she's sleeping. It'll be your turn to make noise and disturb her sleep.
But tell her when it's just the two of you hanging out during the day... not when you're frustrated and trying to sleep.

Anytime you live with other people, you are taking a chance that their sleep schedules will be the same as yours. I used to live with these two guys who would wrestle in bed until around midnight. THen, I had to get up at like 4 AM the next morning. After several months of this, I suffered from sleep deprivation. I recall being in a fog. I later came to realize that this was a result of toxic buildup in my brain. I have long since moved on and am no longer in contact with these dudes. I should have moved out a lot sooner than I did, but at the time they got mad that I would leave them in a pinch. As a result, I suffered for months, had poor performance on my job resulting in being fired, and had to live in a van for 2 weeks in the bitter cold.

If you're still in a university owned dorm or apartment, you may need to take it up with one of the housing staff members. I eventually got to the point where my parents and I decided that the best solution was not to have a roommate. If you're in your own apartment, try asking her to just turn down her PC speakers. That would stop the noise, but, she could still IM.

i got some of those foam earplugs that the construction guys wear. they work AWESOME. i went on a trip to louisiana (rebuilding, etc.) and slept in a room with 13 other women (3 snorers) and never heard a thing (except for my alarm the next day). and get a new roommate next year. if you politely asked and she flat out refused, then she's a butthead.

Wake up in the morning and blast your music, rattle pots and pans in the kitchen and sing loud. Then when she asks you to turn it down, say "Oh, did I wake you up?" Then draw up a roommate agreement that says when the nightly quiet time begins and ends unless agreed upon by all members of the house.

Ask her to get headphones,or turn off the volume,or,at least move the PC to a room that she can shut the door.If she still gets mad then maybe it is time for a roomate who is more considerate of your schedule and feelings

Go to the radio and put a song you like on and listen to it as you go to bed. Works for me every night. It might take a little time to get used to.
Or
Just tell her to use headphones

My boyfriend and that i have a similar situation, we bypass to mattress at diverse cases because of work. He receives abode as early as he can, so that's around the time I basically initiate to nod off and that i stay as quiet as will be even as he's napping.

BOTH OF YOU NEED TO SIT DOWN AND TALK ABOUT THE
SITUATION IT NOT FAIR TO YOU TO HAVE TO GO WITH SLEEP BECAUSE SHE NOT DOING RIGHT, IT ABOUT
RESPECT EACH OTHER, AND SHE NEED TO KNOW HOW
YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS, AND IF SHE GET MAD SO BE IT.
AND IF YOU CANT WORK THING OUT THEN YOU MAY HAVE
TO GET A NEW ROOM MATE, BECAUSE YOU NEED YOUR
SLEEP. AND IT WILL GET WORST IF YOU DONT DO SOMETHING NOW. GOOD LUCK.
