coz without him, the whole story would fall apart... he's the one who killed hamlet's father so that he would be king, (in case you're wondering why hamlet didn't automatically suceed in his father's throne, its because it is a convention before in Danish court that the royal council named the next king)

i remember my professor saying something about the time Hamlet was written by Shakespeare, my professor said something like Hamlet is like the reflection of what is happening in Elizabeth's court because she was sick and many are trying to be her sucessor... so Shakespeare's Hamlet presented in an English audience would think that Hamlet is the sucessor to the throne so shakespeare actually presented Claudius as a usurper so that people would realize that it may happen to Queen Elizabeth... or something like that...

Polonius is perhaps the most important crucial character (beside of course, Hamlet) he knows the most, but not all, Claudius is the catalyst for Hamlet's agonized deliberation of the nature of life, his eternal "to be, or not to be". The greatest tragedy ever written . Claudius married Hamlet's mother, the dowager Queen, and Hamlet's uncle. Mother marries brother -in-law usurping Hamlet. And Hamlet's father's ghost appears accusing Claudius of his murder. and demanding retribution. But that is mere plot mechanics, Claudius serves as a vehicle for Shakespeare to address the whole circle of life abstractly and the individuals choice in his own destiny. Even hesitation is an option. The preeminent scholar of Shakespeare is Harold Bloom and his last book is a the most incisive and insightful appraisal of not just Hamlet, the play but hoe Shakespeare the playwright directed our course of civilization .

The present King of Denmark and Hamlet's uncle. He succeeds to the throne by murdering his brother and incestuously marrying his sister-in-law. He is devious and manipulative, except for one moment of fearful regret.Claudius is Hamlet's antagonist and the villain of the play. He begins his evil deeds by murdering his own brother (Hamlet's father), then marrying his widowed wife (Hamlet's mother). Hamlet learns from the ghost of his father that Claudius is the murderer; as a result, he spends the entire play trying to gain his revenge against Claudius. When Claudius realizes that Hamlet has begun to suspect him, he arranges to have the Prince killed. When his first plan fails, he creates several back-up plans with the assistance of Laertes, a hasty and impulsive young man whose sister Ophelia has been in love with Hamlet. Though his plot succeeds in killing Hamlet, he also dies in the final moments of the play. Hamlet stabs him, then forces him to drink poisoned wine.
