49 states are on the north American continent (Hawaii is an island chain in the Pacific Ocean), however when someone refers to the 48 contiguous states they mean all the states except Alaska and Hawaii.

Wow . . . The correct answer is 49. Most people correctly removed Hawaii from the list as it is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and clearly not part of the North American content. A number of people answering with "48" were probably thinking of the "48 contiguous states." (contiguous meaning connected).

However, N.A. includes the connected land north of the USA too; thus Alaska should be included bringing us to the correct answer of 49!

Since I live in Alaska, I of course had to put my 2 gold nuggets in. ha-ha.
Yes we are still connected to the rest of the Continent, as far as I know and remember.
Being as how we have been a state since 1959, I guess the correct answer would have to be 49 of the states are on the continent.

We are not in Russia as several people always ask me, we were part of it at one time, but were purchased from them. We also are not part of Canada or Canadia, as I was asked earlier today.

Last time I drove the Alcan Highway, down to the rest of the states, we were seperated by the Canadian Rockies and the Brooks Range which is still considered to be part of the Rockies even though it is in Alaska.

I guess unless we decide to Cesseed from the Union as the Southern States did during the Civil War, or a hugh earthquake, land slide or Irate Russians take us away we will still be part of the North American Continent.
As are Canada, and Mexico.

Hawaii is not geographically part of any continent, but is politically part of North America. It is on a seperate Continental Plate from the other states though. So it depends on how you look at it. Alaska is definitely one of the Continental United States (people who say there are 48 Continental States are incorrect). Hopefully I helped you?
