It's like a prenatal ultra sound, it's just checking you and your baby to make sure your both healthy trough out the pregnancy period till you give birth.

An ultrasound is a picture using sound waves to look at things inside the body. An antenatal ultrasound is used to look at the baby while you are pregnant. Sound waves are the safest way to get a picture of the baby. From that picture, the doctor can tell if the baby is the right size for how old it is, check for any problems, and if it's old enough, tell you if it's a boy or a girl!

An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to show the size of a hidden but solid object. This is a fairly rountine test an usually occurs at week 18, though it can be performed at any stage during your pregnancy. It allows you to check on your baby's development, helps comfirm your due date, and it may tell you the sex of your baby if you want to know.

If you are not sure you want one, ask why it is being organised and decide for yourself whether you wish to undergo one. It is not a painful or harmful procedure.

An ultrasound cn also be performed closer to the birth as an indicator of where the baby is lying and how the birth should be managed. For example, it can indicate that the placenta is lying in a lower part of the uterus and therfore that a caesarean section may be needed. It is also used in instances where the mother could be miscarring to detect a foetal heart beat.

SCREENING TESTS
NUCHAL TRANSLUCENCY (NT) SCAN
Gives an estimate of risk for down's syndrome based on a measurement of the thickness of the fluid-filled space (nuchal translucency) at the back of the baby's neck, as well as the mother's age and the stage of pregnancy. Detects around 60-70 per cent of babies with down's syndrome and may indicate other fetal abnormalities.
When: 12-13 weeks
How: Ultrasound

ROUTINE ULTRASOUND SCAN
This scan is also sometimes known as the fetal morphology scan or fetal anomaly scan, A systematic examination of the baby, looking at overall growth and development of the spine, limbs and vital organs.
When: 18-20 weeks

"ante" means before, "natal" means birth. Antenatal ultrasound means using sound waves to visualize the fetus before birth.

Do you mean neonatal ultrasound? I'm an x-ray tech and work closely with ultrasound techs and I've never heard that...I see the natal in it...found out what ante means....before birth maybe??

from my medical knowledge, i would have to say that it's just a regular ultrasound.

ANTE- is before
NATAL is birth.
soooooo,... before birth ultrasound.

just an ultrasound of baby in uterus. if there were other terms like intra or entero (something of that sort) it would be an internal ultrasound.

Does this help?

Good luck!!

:o)

It's an ultrasound done before you get pregnant, to identify any preexisting problems.
