Our daughter started to learn her alphabet at about two years old. She had a talking doll that recited the alphabet, alphabet blocks and lots of books of stories and nursery rhymes which we'd read to her, among other toys, and cassettes (now CDs) of children's songs and stories. Both our kids enjoyed toys that involved communication skills at this age.

anything made by the LEAP FROG company. OMG...I luv that company. Every toy I have purchased from them has been a favorite of my kids....The Leapster is a favorite of my son's...it is an educational handheld video game..you identify letters, colors, numbers, counting , they have Dora, spongebob,,and they have different games for different age levels..
..best ever DVD...The Letter Factory...my son knew all the letters and their sounds at age 2 from watching the video....

I just bought the coolest thing for my daughter's second birthday. It's an easel, made by fischer price, that helps you learn numbers, colors, letters, and such. It cost me about 80 bucks, but it's so cool, and my daughter just has a ball! It's recommended for 3+, so she'll love it!

A kitchen set. She has to learn soon enough. And lacy clothing and DIRTY magazines, and not the ones out of your backyard either.
