I recently had a discussion in class regarding experiences that have led to a greater understanding of social justice and equality, and it has interested me to ask the question:

What sort of experiences have people had to develop a greater understanding of equality and social justice, that is where individuals and groups recieve fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society. Any thoughts / experiences?

they would be pretty neat concepts if they actually came into practice. few are really able to argue that on societal levels anyone is close to achieving such noble minded aims. Systems are too corrupt and people are too appreciative of the benefits they recieve from the systems.

The best way to get people to feel like they have been treated equally is to probably educate them as best as we can. The problem with things like social justice is inevitably all we can really do is train the next generation to do better than we are (coming from someone of that next generation). The bigger issues which lead to inequality (stratification, poverty, unfair education and employment practices) dont really go away because someone says no more of this. Still theres always the hope that if we keep working together (meaning people come from a lot of different walks of life) we can learn more about each other and hopefully see what people want and need, since a lot of us really do want the same things. If we can do that, then we can hopefully find out how to get the most people the best that we can.

i recently began to study sociology. before this i thought i ubderstood relitvly well the way the world worked. but the world is a much darker place than it is portrayed to be isnt it? the biggest thing that got me was the fact that in certain times in history genocide was concidered acceptable by many people... wtf?! thats crazy! i think that only those who have atleast in part studied inequality and social justice have any real knowlage of the subject. im sure i still know pretty much nothing about it but im not sure if i want to. i guess, seeing that ive had a comfortable life so far, i was never involved with inequality and never had to think about it till now.
