my 13 yr old son, seems to be spiraling out of control.he has been on strattera and concerta.Which the strattera seemed to work really well for awhile, then, after about3 or 4 months,it was like he wasn't even takin it.I'm a 35 yr old widow, and it gets old having to repeat myself to him all the time,or yell at him.I have tried everything else,it seems.Groundings, taking away privilages,no watchin t.v.,the "old fashioned whippins",i'm runnin out of what to do's...I've heard too much bad raps on those A.D.D. meds,I don't want anything bad to happen to him, but,I don't want most of his memories of being younger,of me yellin at him all the time, and bustin his butt...I know I had plenty and then some ,of my share of whippins when I was growin up..But,then,D.C.F.S., wasn't as "popular"as it is now days. They step in when they shouldn't and don't when they need to.Sometime he can b the best kid.but he's not doin well in school, and 70%of the time, has the most hateful attitude....HELP..............

It sounds like he's crying out for help just as much as you are. I'd try some good family counseling - I think you'd be surprised how much of the problem is not contributed to his ADD. And I think you'd also be surprised how much it will help you understand him as well. It sounds like he's had a hard life, and things haven't been real easy for you as his mother either. He's not just being naughty, he's being naughty because he wants something - deeper than what you can see. In the meantime, try to focus on the positives, I know it's probably not easy to find them because of the troubles, but something as simple as "thanks for putting your dishes away after dinner tonight" goes a long ways. And bless you!!! Try to stay positive for yourself :) Bad things happen to good people, and we either let it take us down, or learn from it and let it make us stronger.
Best wishes!

I am one of 3 kids. We all always knew that all three of us were ADD but we are also all 3 very intelligent. Our parents thoery was as long as we could handle it ourselves no drugs. If our school work and behavior got out of control then we would have to be out on medication. That is the same theory I am taking with my son. My sister and I are both still ok. However, my brother started medication his junior year of high school. His grades were dropping dramatically and mom decided it was time. You have to find one that works and make sure he takes it every day. Good luck it is a tough disease. Just try to remember he can't help it. It is a disease.

I'm assuming that you've been to a phychiatrist, if he's been prescribed the medication. Obviously, it's not working. He may need a combination of medication, such as anti-depressants.
I would speak to his doctor about this. Usually there is a follow-up consultation after a doctor prescribes medication, especially for children. He can offer you a combination of behavioral therapy and medication. This is very serious behavior, and a therapist can help. Good luck!

Please don't let those doctors drug up your child. They told me I had A.D.D and it turned out I had epilepsy. Honestly, and for reasons I won't begin to touch, I don't believe a.d.d exists. Keep trying to discipline him the best you can, and if that doesn't work, it's likely he is just one of those stubborn people, like I was, who has to learn the hard way. ( Which I did.) Consider adolescent boot camp or a detention schools. This is a very effective alternative to drugs. If you take him before the courts, usually they'll give a court order for something similar and you might not even have to pay for it.

this is a great website www.fedup.com.au it may be the path you want to take. Please don't give drugs to your child
here is an extract i have posted before
"CHILDREN as young as five have suffered strokes, heart attacks, hallucinations and convulsions after taking drugs to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Documents obtained by The Australian reveal that almost 400 serious adverse reactions have been reported to the Therapeutic Goods Administration, some involving children as young as three.
Cases include the sudden death of a seven-year-old, and a five-year-old who suffered a stroke after taking Ritalin. Children also experienced heart palpitations and shortness of breath after taking Dexamphetamine.
Others taking Ritalin or Dexamphetamine - the two most commonly used ADHD drugs - experienced hair loss, muscle spasms, severe abdominal pain, tremors, insomnia, severe weight loss, depression and paranoia.
Almost 60 of the adverse-reaction reports dating back to 1980, obtained under Freedom of Information laws, involved children under the age of 10.
The TGA has asked pharmaceutical companies to provide updated information about any cardiovascular side effects involving ADHD medication. "The TGA is currently reviewing this new information," a TGA spokeswoman said.
Prescriptions for Ritalin increased tenfold after the drug was listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in August last year, reducing the cost from $49 to $29.50, or $4.70 for concession card holders.
More than 5800 prescriptions were written for Ritalin in January this year, compared with 523 in August last year. Prescriptions for Dexamphetamine jumped from 96,000 a year to 232,000 in the 10 years to 2004-05.
The US Food and Drug Administration is reviewing 90 studies to determine whether ADHD drugs were linked to the deaths of 25 people, including 19 children, between 1999 and 2003.
The drugs were also associated with 54 cases of cardiovascular episodes, including heart attacks, strokes and serious heartbeat disturbances.
Last week, a panel of pediatric experts advising the FDA recommended new information about psychiatric and heart risks be added to the labels of ADHD drugs.
They declined to recommend the "black box" warning - the strongest for prescription drugs - which a different advisory panel endorsed last month."

it might not be ADD after all. Did you know that anger and aggression are part of depression and/or Bi-polar disease in kids? Take him to a therapist to see what he/she thinks, then talk to your Dr. about some new meds possibly. You say you are a widow, then there was a death in your sons life too that he might not be able to deal with. i strongly urge you to try therapy

At 13 he's probably discovered that his meds make him high. Fun thing to abuse but, it would make him act less sedated that's for sure. Why not take him to a therapist instead of unhumanely sedating him with legalised and medicinal speed?

I've just begun accupuncture treatment for ADD. I'm an adult and I don't know if they do it for kids. I haven't seen results yet, but it might take a few treatments. You might want to at least look into it.
