You can transfer your iTunes to yhe MAC without losing any files. This is actually easy once you know the secret of working with the iPod as a regular device, rather than as a special auto-synchronizing device. Of course, the sync feature is a major feature of the iPod, so to avoid loss of files you should disable auto-synchronization.
To disable Autosync:
1. Plug your iPod into the MAC and launch iTunes.
2. In addition to the usual "Library", "Podcasts", "Party Shuffle", etc,. you should also see your iPod on the left side. Click on it to select it.
3. Now, along the bottom right edge of the iTunes window are a bunch of little icons: click on the one that looks like a tiny iPod. It'll bring up the configuration window: "iPod configuration options in Apple's iTunes"
4. Select "Manually manage songs and playlists".
5. Now, close the preferences window and go back to the main iTunes window. You should still be looking at all the songs that are on your iPod. To copy them onto the MAC, select all the songs by using Edit --> Select All then drag them all onto the "Library" entry in the left column. Give it a few minutes to copy everything and you should be set to go with a restored iTunes library.
NOTE: Once that's all copied over, go back to the iTunes preferences and re-enable the autosync feature if desired.

what you can do is
install itunes on your mac
then connect your IPOD
then it'll ask whether to 'connect this new ipod to the new itunes'
THAT WILL ERASE YOUR SONGS.. SO DON'T SAY YES.
let that message be still on
search for your IPOD and open it
i don't use a mac so i don't know how u wud do that on a mac
on pc you would simply go to 'my computer' and open the ipod and copy the songs.
try to do something like that
ones the songs are copied on to your mac's hard drive you can say yes to the previous message.

This might help.
Try opening iTunes and click on the help menu at the top.
In the"question" box in the right upperhand corner, search for "Moving your iTunes library to another computer." Some suggestions and links should come up.
If this isn't helpful, you can also try the Apple website;they have tons of tutorials.
